The African NDC Investment Awards ceremony took place on September 24th, 2024, during New York Climate Week at the African NDC Institutional Investment Summit. The awards recognize outstanding achievements in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) across various sectors.

Awards and Winners

The awards honor governments, investors, development partners, private sector entities, philanthropies, and Presidential Climate Investment Champions who drive investments and enhance the readiness and ambition of Africa’s NDC projects. These projects require between $3 trillion and $7 trillion by 2030.

The 2024 African NDC Investment Awards honored several distinguished leaders, including H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, who received the Presidential Green Industrialization Investment Statesman of the Year award.

Other winners include H.E. Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, who received the Presidential Green Infrastructure Investment Statesman of the Year award, and H.E. Bola Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who received the Presidential Just Transition Investment Statesman of the Year award.

Outstanding NDC Projects and Initiatives

The Awards also recognized outstanding NDC projects and initiatives, with winners in categories such as Best Waste NDC Investment Initiative of the Year, Best Energy NDC Investment of the Year, and Best Transport NDC Investment Initiative of the Year.

The Cape Town Waste Management Strategy received the Best Waste NDC Investment Initiative of the Year award, while the Microsoft and G42 AI Kenya Renewables Investment Programme received the Best Energy NDC Investment of the Year award.

The Lobito Corridor Investment Promotion Authority received the Best Transport NDC Investment Initiative of the Year award, and the Republic of Congo Forest Management Program received the Best Forestry NDC Investment Initiative of the Year award.

Advancing Green Industrialization

The Awards reinforced Africa’s dedication to advancing green industrialization, unlocking the continent’s vast climate and investment potential, and inspiring bold leadership and collaboration on the path to sustainability.

According to the report, the awards ceremony convened dignitaries and numerous leaders from public, private, and philanthropic investment sectors across Africa and around the globe, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to addressing Africa’s NDC investment opportunities at the scale required.

As the continent continues to push for a more sustainable future, initiatives like the African NDC Investment Awards play a key role in recognizing and promoting outstanding achievements in NDCs, and encouraging further investment and collaboration in the sector.

The awards have been held annually since 2022, with previous presentations at COP27 in Egypt and COP28 in Dubai, and have gained prominence as a platform for showcasing and recognizing the efforts of African governments, investors, and development partners in driving investments and enhancing the readiness and ambition of Africa’s NDC projects.
