Satrix Launches Botswana ETFs on BSE

Satrix has expanded its African footprint with the secondary listing of three Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed exchange traded funds on the Botswana Stock Exchange, with trading commencing on July 9. The newly listed products are the Satrix MSCI World Equity Feeder ETF, the Satrix MSCI Emerging Markets Feeder ETF, and the Satrix S&P 500 Feeder ETF. This move marks Satrix’s latest expansion beyond South Africa and gives Botswana-based investors access to global equity markets through locally traded investment vehicles. Satrix currently offers 38 JSE-listed ETFs with assets under management exceeding R90 billion.

According to Duma Mxenge, Head of Business and Market Development at Satrix, the listings are intended to broaden investment options for local investors and strengthen links between Botswana’s capital market and international markets. Mxenge stated that the dual listing of these ETFs will further facilitate the globalisation of the BSE and strengthen its position within global financial markets. The initiative aims to contribute to the development of capital markets in Botswana, offering a mechanism for residents to invest in international equities without handling foreign regulatory environments.

The move reflects a broader trend of cross-border capital market integration across the continent, where local exchanges increasingly seek to offer sophisticated financial products that previously required investors to look toward South Africa for exposure. By hosting these feeder structures directly on the BSE, Botswana eliminates a layer of complexity for investors who might otherwise face currency conversion challenges or restrictions when purchasing offshore assets. This approach mirrors similar strategies employed by other regional exchanges to deepen their liquidity pools while maintaining regulatory oversight locally.

Kopano Bolokwe, Head of Product Development at the BSE, noted that the listings represent an important step in the exchange’s 10x by 2030 strategy and reflect growing recognition of ETFs among pension funds and asset managers. He added that the products provide investors with a convenient means of gaining exposure to international markets while supporting portfolio diversification. The BSE has been actively pursuing listings that add depth to its product suite, moving beyond traditional mining and banking stocks to include derivative and index-based instruments.

Catherine Lesetedi, Group Chief Executive Officer of BIHL, emphasized the value these listings add to the local market beyond the administrative aspect of another bourse listing. She described the development as a sign to the growth of Botswana’s markets. “This is yet another sign to the growth of Botswana’s markets that we all celebrate,” Lesetedi said. The expansion aligns with broader efforts to modernize financial infrastructure in Botswana, ensuring that local capital can be deployed efficiently into both domestic and international opportunities.
