Accenture’s August quarter results and FY27 guidance signaled a slowdown in organic revenue growth, pointing to a tougher demand environment for major Indian IT companies including Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, Infosys Ltd, Wipro Ltd, Tech Mahindra Ltd and HCL Technologies Ltd.

Decelerating Growth and Booking Trends

ICICI Securities noted that Accenture’s Q4FY26 and FY26 bookings grew 2.7 per cent and 1.6 per cent year-over-year respectively, indicating modest performance. The brokerage expects Indian large-cap IT services firms to face similar moderating growth. It emphasized that an acceleration in managed services bookings is essential for improving revenue growth trajectories across the sector.

FY27 revenue guidance suggests organic growth will decelerate to 2-2.5 per cent at the midpoint, down from 3 per cent in FY26. The report highlighted increased pricing competition in the August 2026 quarter and management comments about difficult demand conditions, further signaling headwinds for Indian IT services companies.

M&A and Margin Pressures

Jefferies warned that growth in FY28 may be lower than consensus expects, posing risks to analyst forecasts. The brokerage advised that Indian IT firms may need to increase M&A activity to sustain growth, which could pressure profit margins. It also noted that weak macro conditions and AI-related disruption might push floor P/E multiples for large IT names to 12-13 times from sub-10 times levels, as concerns about terminal value ease.

Despite a potential near-term rally driven by these multiple expansions, Jefferies maintains a cautious stance and recommends trimming positions on any upward movement. The firm prefers mid-sized IT companies, naming Coforge and Sagility as top picks.

Pricing Stability and AI Impact

Emkay Global observed that management commentary indicated no significant change in broader demand conditions. Pricing for Accenture remained stable throughout FY26 but declined in several areas during Q4, suggesting persistent competitive pressure. The brokerage highlighted that AI-driven productivity gains may enable vendors to handle incremental workloads with reduced hiring needs.

Accenture’s fixed-price and outcome-based contracts now represent 65 per cent of bookings, reflecting a shift from effort-based pricing models. Emkay concluded that the overall narrative supports demand stabilization rather than a robust cyclical recovery, and maintains a pecking order ranking: TCS, Infosys, LTM, HCL Tech, TECHM, and Wipro.

Nuvama Institutional Equities found Accenture’s results and guidance slightly positive for Indian IT, citing early signs of discretionary spending recovery in consulting, though not immediately. It remains optimistic that Gen AI will expand the total addressable market for Indian IT companies.

Choice Institutional echoed improving demand signals, particularly around AI-led transformation, but cautioned that converting these into actual revenues remains a key monitor. It forecasts FY27 as another subdued growth year, constrained by AI productivity pass-throughs, pricing pressure and soft discretionary spending. Its preferred picks include TCS, TECHM among large caps, and Coforge and MPHASIS among mid-cap firms.

The NIFTY IT Index has underperformed the broader market by 4.4-4.6 per cent over the past six months due to weak demand, macro uncertainties, reduced discretionary spending, AI disruption, and evolving industry economics, partially offset by rupee depreciation. These factors collectively highlight the challenges facing the sector during a transitional period marked by technological shifts and economic headwinds.
