MerQube unveils balanced South Africa stock index

The Oribi South Africa Top 30 Prescient ETF, launched on May 6, 2026, provides investors with a more balanced exposure to South African equities by tracking the MerQube South Africa Top 30 Price Return Index (ZAR) (MQZA30P).

The index selects the 10 largest companies from each of South Africa’s three key equity segments—Resources, Financials, and Diversified sectors—with each sector receiving an equal 33.3% weighting. This structure aims to reduce concentration risk often associated with traditional South African equity indices.

Traditional South African equity indices have historically been dominated by a small number of mega-cap companies. The MerQube South Africa Top 30 Index applies equal weighting at both the sector and constituent levels to address this imbalance.

Zack Bezuidenhoudt, MerQube’s head of sales for EMEA and APAC, stated that South Africa’s flagship indices have long faced concentration risk. The index offers a transparent, rules-based benchmark that spreads exposure across sectors without sacrificing scale or liquidity.

Eligible companies must be common equities primarily listed on the JSE, domiciled in South Africa, and have a minimum free-float factor of 10%. Within each sector, the top 10 companies are selected based on free-float market capitalization.

The Resources sector includes Energy and Materials companies, while Financials covers Financials and Real Estate. The Diversified category encompasses all remaining sectors. The index is reviewed annually, with reconstitution based on February-end data and implemented on the third Friday of March.

The MerQube South Africa Top 30 Index is available in Price Return (MQZA30P), Total Return (MQZA30T), and Net Total Return (MQZA30N) versions. The ETF is managed by Oribi Capital Partners and Prescient Management Company, with MerQube serving as the index sponsor, administrator, and calculation agent.

For investors, the equal-weight approach aims to prevent any single company or sector from dominating performance, providing broader exposure to the South African economy. However, maintaining equal weights requires rebalancing, which could raise transaction costs.

The launch reflects MerQube’s expansion into emerging-market index solutions. The South Africa Top 30 Index will form part of its emerging markets offering alongside planned indices covering markets including South Korea and Taiwan.

Oribi and Prescient, both based in South Africa, manage the ETF, while MerQube oversees the index’s methodology and daily calculations.
